The Long Stare – Common Kestrel – Mounted Print. A Kestrel staring out of Elmley Nature reserve, on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. From his perfect perching point he surveys the land for movement in the long grasses.
The masked Kestrel used to be one of our commonest raptors in the UK, a common sight hovering over motorways across the UK. Sadly it has diminished in number, but not in majesty. This striking male bird, was searching for a place to hunt, and used this old gatepost as a perch to locate that perfect spot. I think the name “The Long Stare” fits quite well.
